Ya’ll know I have a soft spot for the homeless kids who frequent the Safe Horizons youth drop-in center. I just purchased a bunch of sexuality books for their library. And have begun sending clothes and other goods their way. I’m unofficially adopting them! You can too! Doing good is a wonderfully selfish act!

*When you walk into the drop-in center there are clothing and shoe racks with goods the kids can take and use. These rack, when I have been there, don’t have a lot of good stuff on them. But you can stock them with shoes, socks (new), underwear (new), t-shirts, pants, coats, hats, mittens, hats, belts, and more…

*Backpacks and messenger bags are good, as they need to carry their belongings with them. They really seem to like hoodie sweater shirts. Especially of they are plain or have skulls, or other cool graphics.

*You are dealing primarily with kids who are 24 years old and under. They have pride, like to look decent and want to fit in. Think about who they are as you pull your donations together – “would a young person feel good and prideful in this?” They are nearly 100% people of color, and about 50% LGBT.

*The center has a library. Donate good books. Not the stuff you just want to get off your bookshelf – but great reads.

*Other good things to donate include, toiletries (new soap, shampoo, cosmetics, etc…), safer sex supplies, and art supplies.

Drop off between 2pm and 7pm.

33 Essex St

Ask for Greg or Johanna. Tell them, “Ducky sent me.” That will help them know you are a friend with good intentions.

*You can donate labor. They need volunteers to help with cooking and cleaning. It’s not fancy food, so anyone can help. They are also open to creative people who can lead creative classes. (Currently they have groups – art, sex, yoga, etc…) They are not the easiest group to lead because frequently the kids are doing laundry and getting basic needs cared for during groups. But you’ll get the hang of how they flow after a couple experiences. The staff is very supportive of volunteers.

*You can donate money.

*You can also copy and paste this text into a document. Print it out. Cut into business card size slips of paper. Put them in your outreach cards in your bag. When you see a young person in need, give them a card.
