Sexy yogurt ad...
...backfires! This photo is part of a new Brazilian advertising campaign for low-fat yogurt in which iconic film images are re-imagined with fat women where thin women used to be. Its tagline is: Forget about it. Men’s preference will never change. Fit Light Yogurt.

I say... Dump the yogurt, the sorry ideas about women's bodies, and the stereotyping of what men like. And love that woman! She's hot. (Link by way of [info]pantryslut.)

Gotta love the fat hotties, even if the yogurt people don't know how to appreciate a good thing.

The mere fact that you look at that picture and see a 'fat' hottie is what is wrong with society as a whole. She probably fits into what is considered a normal, healthy weight range.

Just so we're on the same page, I think the word FAT, a word that so many women fear, is an incredible and amazing word that can be used to describe shape and curve. Like, okay, this woman is clearly healthy, AND she's fat. And, hey, fat is relative as well as awesome.

Gotcha, I knew I was overreacting, hence the apology. I call myself fat all the time, in a non-derogatory way, but people around me always get uncomfy. I guess I let their negative connotation of the word colour my interpretation of your comment. Again, my apologies, some days one (I) should not be allowed a keyboard. *soft smile*

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being the "calling fat in a mean way" person. Which is one of the fucked up results of meanies taking that word and using it to sell fucking lo-cal yogurt!

Wow...that's a really assholish sentiment of theirs. But I've heard that there's mad body image problems for Brazilian woman.

I love how they assume that all men would be much more attracted to Mena Suvari than to the supposedly "fat" model in that photo. The fact is, some men like 'em skinny and "barely legal" and some men like 'em curvy and womanly...which is fortunate because women come in a variety of shapes and sizes. And no amount of low fat yogurt is gonna make us all look like underfed starlets.

This is a Brazilian ad agency though, and Brazilian men, moreso than American men, tend to like thinner women. Brazil has more image issues than the U.S., believe it or not. We spend more money on cosmetics and cosmetic surgery per capita than any other country in the world. I know a lot of my cousins and friends would find that woman very unattractive.
Personally, I think she looks good, but then again, I've been "Americanized" after living in the states for 19 years.

I actually knew that about Brazilians (although I had heard it was worse in Argentina). But I was under the impression that Brazilians were also great lovers of the full, round derriere....hardly a feature that one associates with super-skinny actresses like Mena Suvari.

But that wasn't really my point. I just think it does men (and women) a disservice to assume they're all attracted to the same thing. We could just as easily say "American men are only attracted to leggy blonde chicks with big boobs," because that what the media likes to bombard us with. But the truth is that men (regardless of whether they're from the US, Brazil, or Inner Mongolia) are complex creatures and to suggest that they ALL have the same taste in women is ludicrous.

Certainly, if a woman wants to appeal to the largest sub-set of the male population, she should try to conform to whatever that group prefers (and in the case of Brazilians, that may very well be ultra-thin supermodels). But for most of us, that isn't even a possibility. I know I won't be switching to low-fat yogurt in an effort to look more like Pamela Anderson. Fortunately, my husband (and a lot of other guys) seem to like me just the way I am.

Yes, Brazilian men tend to like the derriere, as well as the breasts, but the stereotype is more "Amazonian Goddess" instead of "Pop Starlet," if that makes sense.

I don't necessarily disagree with your point about the ad, but I definitely could see this being a successful ad in Brazil. Women would look at her and think "Oh God, I don't want to look like that!"

Which is stupid, IMHO, but it's how these things are.

You'd be surprised at how different cultures define "fat" and what "fat" means, be it positive, negative, or none of the above.

When I was visiting the Czech Republic, I had a female friend that was about the size of that girl in the picture. While referencing her in a conversation, a German colleague called her "The fat girl with the long hair."

The Americans were at a loss for words. Had he just insulted our friend?

this led into a very interesting discussion about how you can call someone "fat" in the Czech Republic and it doesn't have any social stigma or negative connotation attached to it. It's just a basic descriptor like saying someone is "tall" or "short."

Wow, I'm with you. I'd prefer that gal to Mena Suvari anyway...

I think of the poor model... ever wonder what someone in that position feels like? Here's her chance to be sexy, to show off her stuff and literally be compared to an icon of sexual imagery, and the whole point is, "Not sexy"?

Sounds like doublethink to me.

I felt for her as well. It takes courage to strip and pose for a camera...I wonder if she knew from the get-go what the ad was going to be like, or if she got an unpleasant surprise next time she opened a women's magazine.

I can't speak for Brazilians, but she looks good. People tend to do what they are told and think what they are told to think. She looks good, but a lot of people, when told not to find this model attractive just do what they are told.

There's a sort of double-think going on. People might drool over a supermodel - but only if they are told to. If they met the same supermodel on the street, and had no idea who that person was, they probably wouldn't give them a second glance.
