Discriminatory Insurance Practices by Honda

Below is a reprint of a letter from the American Fertility Association. Please read and join the letter writing campaign.

19 August 2008

Dear Friends and Supporters of The AFA,

We have learned that Honda Manufacturing of Alabama has issued a request to its health insurance provider, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, asking that they specifically "...exclude domestic partners (same-sex partners) from Assisted Reproductive Technology benefits including diagnostic services related to fertility/infertility that have a fertility or infertility diagnosis."

The AFA is committed to fairness and equality for all people who desire to raise a family, and believe that the option to pursue medical treatment for infertility must be available to all those who need treatment, not only those with the resources to pay for the treatment out of pocket. Decisions made during infertility treatments must be strictly medical decisions, not financial ones.

We are dismayed that Honda Manufacturing of Alabama would take a stance that can only be described as discriminatory and anti-family, denying gay and lesbian couples ART benefits that they otherwise would have been able to access. As we said when we reached out to Honda nearly a month ago, asking for a meeting to discuss their policy, we stand ready to work with them to ensure fair and equal treatment for all their employees who desire to create a family. Honda has yet to respond to our requests.

Why are we taking on this issue? Because when it comes to reproductive choice, there is no "us" or "them". We're all in this together, and we need to stand with each other as a united front.

Please take a moment to call Honda and send a letter:

Honda Manufacturing of Alabama
Attn: Mark Morrison, Corporate Affairs Manager
Attn: Hiroshi Sasamoto, President

Feel free to craft your own letter, or use something like this:

+++++++
Dear Mr. Morrison and Mr. Sasamoto,

We're writing to ask you to end your discriminatory policy against same sex couples by denying them Assisted Reproductive Technology insurance benefits while providing those same benefits to opposite sex couples. This policy is unfair, unjust and ultimately, anti-family.
Thank you,

Your Name

+++++++

We would also appreciate it if you would make a contribution to The AFA so that we can continue to advocate on behalf of all those who, more than anything, want to have a family.

Honda really needs to do a 180 and turn thier decicion around. They could lose a lot of business.

Is this Honda in general or specifically Honda Manufacturing of Alabama? I think getting an Alabama company ... even one that's essentially an affiliate of a larger company ... to change a policy like this back to something progressive might be difficult.

I'll certainly be checking on this when I get my next car, particularly since I was thinking of buying another Honda.

I agree the discrimination is wrong, but the solution that I think is preferable is to not have insurance cover it for anyone. Perhaps Honda would go for that solution.
